MEDICAL ACUPUNCTURE
· What is acupuncture?
Medical acupuncture is a therapeutic method that usually involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles. Modern medical practitioners developed medical acupuncture as an adaptation of Chinese acupuncture. Instead of relying on inexact metaphors to describe the body’s responses to treatment, we employ current knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathology, all in keeping with evidence-based medicine. Myofascial palpation is used to help the doctor determine the location and sources of discomfort and dysfunction.
Acupuncture works by activating nerve fibers near a point. This stimulus brings about changes that help to balance nerve signaling and neurotransmitter activity from the periphery (the acupuncture point) to the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and autonomic nervous system (which governs processes like immune status, digestion, mood, and more). Acupuncture also releases tension from the muscles and enveloping fibrous network called “fascia”.
To put it more simply, acupuncture stimulates nerves, helps increase blood flow to the tissues, releases endorphins, which is the body’s natural pain relieving hormone, helps relax tight/contracted muscles and stimulates flaccid muscles.
Treatment with medical acupuncture and its related techniques of laser therapy and massage help to promote health and well-being by preventing illness and addressing a variety of medical conditions and pain problems.

· What animals can benefit from acupuncture?
At this time, Dr. Randle only treats dogs and cats on a case-by-case basis, but all animals can benefit!
· What can I expect?
Dr. Randle will choose specific acupuncture points based on your pet’s condition and history, her physical assessment of your pet and your pet’s tolerance to the needles. Acupuncture is very safe and relatively painless. Patient response may vary from not noticing needle insertion to mild reactions. Most patients relax and enjoy their treatments! Some patients will have an immediate response to treatment, while others will improve after a few treatments. On occasion your pets condition may worsen before it gets better.
